How Soon Will I Get Paid Once I’m Awarded Disability Benefits?

Unfortunately, there is no set time frame for when you will receive benefits once the Social Security Administration (SSA) finds you are disabled. Some claimants receive benefits within just a couple of weeks following a favorable decision, while others wait several months.

Social Security Disability (SSD) payments are processed and paid by National Payment Processing centers. There are eight payment centers nationwide. Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits are processed by your local SSA office, but are paid by the payment centers.

To help speed up the payment process, you should cooperate with the Social Security Administration if they contact you to get information or request documents. For example, if you receive workers’ compensation benefits, SSA likely will need information regarding the payments you have previously received from your workers’ compensation claim. The quicker you can provide this information, the quicker SSA can process and pay your benefits.

Once you are deemed disabled and SSA has calculated your benefits, you will receive an award notice, or sometimes multiple notices, if you are eligible for both SSD and SSI benefits. The award notice will explain the amount you should receive in back pay, as well as the amount you should receive on a monthly basis.

If you have been awarded benefits and have questions about payments, you should contact your local SSA office. Should you have additional questions or concerns about the Social Security benefits process, Herdman Yeager, LLC can provide a free consultation.
